How to Tell if Someone is a Good Friend
Having a friend is very important because if you have a friend then you won’t ever be lonely. But you have to make sure that you choose the right friends. If you choose the wrong friend you could end up being an irresponsible person.
Here are 5 ways to make sure you are choosing the right friends
1) Play with your friend and see if they are well-behaved or ill mannered. If they are well behaved then they will listen to grown-ups and follow directions.
2) Talk with your friends to find out what kinds of things they say. A good friend will say things that are respectful or generous and a bad friend will say things that are jealous or mean.
3) Look for friends who are helpful. For example, a good friend will be happy to help you when you are in trouble or if something bad happened to you. An unkind person will not and that means they won’t make a good friend.
4) Don’t act like you are someone’s friend if you don’t want to be. Be polite, but make a choice to spend time with people who will treat you the way you want to be treated.
5) Be nice to your friends and they will be nice to you. If they are not nice to you, just ignore them. If you can count on your friends, and if you like them, then you should hang out with them.
Having a good friend is the best thing ever!!!

That is great advice, Haley! You are so smart already. AND you are a great friend!!!
Hi Mia,
Having friends is a great thing. I bet you have great friends and make a great friend.
Your mom and dad have both helped you understand how words are your friends, too, yes? Words are amazing. You can put them together to tell stories, to write poems, or to help teach. As you have written in your own words, though, you can’t be friends with everyone: “Be polite, but make a choice to spend time with people who will treat you the way you want to be treated.” Editing words when writing is similar to this. As a writer, your dad keeps the words that work best and politely lets the others go. Editing helps him make his writing “well-behaved” and not “ill mannered.”
Haley, this is fantastic advice. Choosing good friends is so important..and so is being a good friend to others. It sounds like you’ve done a lot of thinking on the subject, and it sounds like you’re probably a really good friend! Your writing is coming along beautifully. Que lindo!

Hi Mia,
I love tip #5. And you know what? It’s true for friends when you’re a kid and for friends when you’re a grownup too!
I really like the way you write. I’m going to share your post with my daughter, Katelyn. She’s 11.
Keep up the good work!
